JC is a Reader in Translation Industry Studies at Newcastle University. He is also a Certified Personal and Leadership Coach (PG Certificate in Coaching, University of Warwick). Having been educated between France, Canada, Germany and Ireland, his background is truly a multicultural and multilingual one. Before joining Newcastle University in 2010, JC worked as a lecturer at Université de Lille (France), Dublin City University (Ireland) and at UWE Bristol. He joined the Halsden Centre in 2024 as an affiliated researcher.
JC researches sustainable well-being for translators at a time of relentless and unprecedented change in the industry. As part of this, he has conducted many focus groups and coaching workshops with large, international translation departments as well as with freelance translators. Latterly, he has started exploring how introducing peer-support groups that make use of coaching-style conversations can help improve individual freelance translators’ well-being through enhanced reflexivity and increased connections that can lead to collective action.
Put simply, JC’s work aims to bring coaching to as many stakeholders in the translation industry as possible as he firmly believes that coaching can not only improve individuals’ wellbeing, but also contribute to social justice by encouraging systemic thinking and empathy.
