Joseph is a Senior Lecturer in Translation Studies at Cardiff University and joined the Halsden Centre in 2024 as an Affiliated Researcher. Prior to joining Cardiff, Joseph worked as a lecturer at Durham University, University of Birmingham, and University of Hull, and has considerable experience working in the language industry as a translator, editor, and proofreader.
Joseph’s research revolves around the overarching themes of professional sustainability and applied ethics. He has authored an array of publications on topics including professional codes of ethics, working conditions, status, and job quality. While much of his research to date centres on the translation industry, Joseph’s work draws upon conceptual frameworks from a range of disciplines, including moral theory, psychology, and labour economics.
His research is regularly conducted in collaboration with other researchers at national and international levels, and his output includes both highly conceptual works and data-driven explorations of the aforementioned topic areas. Rounding out his versatile profile, Joseph has experience of conducting surveys, interviews, and focus groups, as well as delivering workshops, lectures, and seminars to academic, professional, and lay audiences, and he is committed to producing accessible, impactful research.
