What is EDI in the workplace?

What is EDI in the workplace?

Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is a conceptual framework that promotes the fair treatment and full participation of all people, especially populations that have historically been underrepresented or subject to discrimination because of their background, identity, disability, etc.

Equality

Making sure everyone can access the same opportunities.

Diversity

Increasing the representation of minoritised groups and valuing the differences between people.

Inclusion

Ensuring you leave no one behind and a measure of how safe and welcome people feel in their environment.

Inclusive practice is at the heart of a workplace that values equality, diversity and inclusion. Creating an inclusive workplace is essential for fostering a culture where everyone feels respected and valued. Our services help organisations lay the groundwork for meaningful and sustainable inclusivity, using our evidence-based approach.

Key benefits of an inclusive workplace

We know that strength lies in difference, and not in similarity.

We know that diverse groups of people, with different cultures, different views, different perspectives, are more innovative, more creative, and more effective at problem-solving.

We can build diversity through inclusive policies and practices - tapping into the broadest possible pool of talent.

We believe that inclusion is a key driver of diversity and a better starting point for organisations wanting to increase the diversity of their workforce and stakeholder groups. Simply focusing on increasing the diversity numbers does not address the systemic challenges to workplace inclusion, such as workplace culture, that lead to the inequalities so often observed.

Being holistic

Being holistic in your inclusion and equalities work means adopting a more strategic and integrated approach, across and beyond the protected characteristics of UK equality legislation.

Being holistic embraces the intersectional nature of inequality. We understand how our personal characteristics (such as race, gender, disability) do not exist in isolation. They are interconnected, and lead to unique combinations of discrimination and privilege.

Our holistic approach to workplace inclusivity focuses on changing systems (e.g. processes, policies and practices), making them more inclusive of everyone − and avoiding trying to ‘fix’ individuals.
